Metal Plasma CutterPlasma is an ionised gas which conducts electricity; it’s created by adding energy to an electrically neutral state gas. The use of plasma in cutting was first discovered over 55 years ago for the purpose of welding in military aircraft production, the discovery of charging of gas with an electric current formed a barrier around the weld thus protecting it from oxidation allowed for further experimentation with the temperature of the gas - resulting in the creation of a system that no longer worked as a welder but in fact a cutting process.

In current times plasma cutting is used to cut steel and various other metals with the use of a plasma torch. The plasma torch consists of an inert gas, or potentially compressed air which is blown out of a nozzle at a high speed. Concurrently an electrical arc is formed through the gas exiting the nozzle towards the surface being cut, changing the gas to plasma. The heat of plasma consequently melts the metal, while the torch moves fast enough to blow the molten metal away from the cut. As originally discovered, plasma is also applied in the use of welding.

Use of Plasma Cutting

As discussed so far, plasma cutting can be used to cut or weld metals. Below are some examples of what plasma cutting can achieve in today’s industry.

Material Type:
  • Aluminum
  • Copper
  • Stainless Steel
  • Steel
  • Structural Steel
  • Mild Steel
Application:
  • 3D Applications
  • Castings
  • I-Beams
  • Trimming
  • Tubing
  • Multi Axis Beveling
Industries:
  • Architectural
  • Automotive
  • Military
  • Fixture Manufacturers

Thanks to the unique properties of plasma, plasma cutters can pass through metal with little or no resistance resulting in a revolutionary speed, accuracy and types of cuts performed by manufacturers in various metals.

In our current times, technology has allowed for the affordable use of plasma cutters not only in the manufacturing industry but on equally on a smaller, personal level. Artists have been successfully using smaller sized plasma cutters for their metal works.
